It was very exciting to film this event. The clip is part of a two-hour documentary entitled Portrait of Castro's Cuba that I made for Turner Broadcasting back then. Ted Turner was attempting to get permission to bring Turner Broadcasting to Cuba and he figured out how to do it. Make a documentary that was subtly critical and not so subtly complementary. Rusty Schweikert had a life-changing experience up there. When he came back, he spoke about it and articulated what he felt. This film presents that speech. When I 1st heard a recording of this I decided to make a movie that presented this beautiful simple yet profound statement. I worked with Rusty Schweikert to make certain it spoke as he had spoken when he 1st gave this talk to a group of Jesuits upon his return from Apollo 9. Many have used this film to help themselves overcome rough times and see the grander picture.

This is one of the first professional documentaries I made–not so long ago. 1964! I got a job as a young documentary filmmaker to go into the streets and asked people what they thought the word brotherhood meant. My client was the National Conference Of Christians and Jews. They wanted me to make a public service announcement which at the time, television stations gave to nonprofit organizations for free. Remember at this time, almost everybody had never seen a 16mm camera and almost no one had ever been filmed. So me and my soundman colleague coming up and asking people questions like this was something people were very unfamiliar with. And the civil rights movement was in full swing, so some people thought that this was a political question why wasn't really asking back on the question at all. I put the film together for a Christmas party at the company that I worked in, a company of young documentary filmmakers. Someone suggested that I should enter it in a film competition and I went for the big folks–the Chicago Film Festival. Very important at the time. My little four-minute documentary won first prize! $3000! So I entered it in about 25 film festivals and I won a prize in each one. Clearly the film touched a subject in a way viewers had not seen before, especially film festival goers. This short film helped me on my way to become a professional “one-man band” “man in the street” documentary filmmaker.

The entire 30 min. film is a musical written by a Broadway composer. The film suggested those overweight give up Hungarian goulash. I don't know who ate or eats Hungarian goulash but I came up with this idea of dancing around with the camera. The actress is Madeline Kahn who later became a relatively famous Hollywood actress. 52 seconds of silliness it is.

This is a short clip from my 1st feature length documentary (it won the critics prize at Cannes that year) starring a local insurance man from my community on a “junket” to Las Vegas. Here he is getting a massage and commenting on the women he has “picked up” while there. At the time, the technique I use was very controversial. Some reviewers loved the film. Others “hated” it.

This film shows neither of those things. Instead, it tells the simple and profound story of two friends -- NYC media guru Tony Schwartz, and NYC cop Ken McFeeley.

As McFeeley was dying of lung cancer at 46 years old, he decided to work with Schwartz to make this film to help others quit smoking. To date, thousands have quit after hearing McFeeley's story, and Schwartz became known as "media central" for the anti-smoking cause.

"If You Love Someone Who Smokes" contains no medical details, no special "techniques" and it supports no specific drug solution. But for thousands of smokers, this video gives them the heart and the courage to quit-- for the last time. The film does not scare or intimidate you. But once having seen it, you can never forget it.
