It was very exciting to film this event. The clip is part of a two-hour documentary entitled Portrait of Castro's Cuba that I made for Turner Broadcasting back then. Ted Turner was attempting to get permission to bring Turner Broadcasting to Cuba and he figured out how to do it. Make a documentary that was subtly critical and not so subtly complementary. Rusty Schweikert had a life-changing experience up there. When he came back, he spoke about it and articulated what he felt. This film presents that speech. When I 1st heard a recording of this I decided to make a movie that presented this beautiful simple yet profound statement. I worked with Rusty Schweikert to make certain it spoke as he had spoken when he 1st gave this talk to a group of Jesuits upon his return from Apollo 9. Many have used this film to help themselves overcome rough times and see the grander picture.

In 1995 Michael filmmakers and I got the chance to record actor Michael Kearns on the last performance of his controversial play, Intimacies. He had an incredible career until he came out as a homosexual and I changed him forever. This is one of 6 characters he performed in the play. Rough to watch but worth seeing. I am proud of it in part because it now is a part of our history as an evolving nation supporting freedom for all. Michael Kearns was a leader in his time and a courageous and outspoken man.

It took us a week to shoot these stories in locations that were unbelievably rough - this one in Sumatra near Banda Ache. And these days, few advertisers have the luxury of 3 minutes to tell their stories.
