As my subscribers know, I have an archive of videos from the 1950s and 1960s that I used to make my 6 part PBS television series, Making Sense of the Sixties. I kept my favorite outtake clips and this is one of them. This man speaks with such passion and clarity and anger. The coming of the Black Panther movement was one of the results.

I was making a fundraiser film about some of the people in New York City who needed help because they were struggling. My interviewing style was and still is more of a dialogue than question-and-answer. I visited one apartment building and just talked with people. Great characters they were. I never forgot what the man said about his shoe trees and what they meant to him. Of course now, I am just about their age. And I don't have shoe trees.

He remembered the beautiful poem he recited as a boy to win a declamation competition and picked up hill behind his house to recite it to me. I loved the poem then as I do now. My family got a television, a little black and white one, in 1952. We sat around together and watched it after dinner as a family activity. It was fun. I love this old documentary and use portions of it in several of my documentary films on the 1950s and 1960s.

When we watched this film as kids back then, we knew that he was not telling the whole truth -- because many Americans, including black Americans and others, weren't able to live the freedoms he describes. This film is part of what provoked me to actively join the civil rights movement back then. It is part of my collection of films from the 1950s and 1960s that I used to make my series, Making Sense Of The Sixties.
