Fleet Race #1 at the i14 Worlds started with light winds and clear skies at 8 knots from the South West. It was a prolonged start, with 2 general recalls, forcing the race committee to go to black flag for start sequence no. 3. This did not deter the fleet, and a further 4th start sequence was needed to get the race going.
Overall, 6 boats were disqualified due to the start. The course ran a distance of 1.6 nautical miles. The wind picked up between 10-12 knots by the time the boats finally got off the line. There was a massive fleet spread by the first windward mark rounding.
GBR 1519 finished in first place, completing the course in 94 minutes.
Great showing by all boats on the water. The wind died back down to 8 knots for the second half of the race, a result of the fading sea breeze. Unfortunately this meant that not all boats were able to finish the race under the time limit.
Many thanks to the spectator and safety boats out there today. They did a great job of keeping clear of the racers and helping those in need. Let's hope for a cleaner start by the racers tomorrow, be sure to factor in the current! Otherwise it was a great day on the water with clean sailing and nice weather, who could ask for anything more for day 1 of fleet racing at the I14 Worlds 2013 in Toronto?
